We met Leonard, an elderly man who lives in a tiny apartment infested with bed bugs.

Nonprofit aid groups rely on individual donors like you to operate. Your financial support is critical to services being offered to people in desperate need. Keeping your clothes clean and dry when you’re homeless is a daily struggle.
People are in most need of the following items:
Free food and meals are available for everyone to enjoy in the Founders Cafe. One entree (meat or vegetarian) with sides is served at every meal service Monday-Saturday. Blanchet House’s three-year strategic plan was created through an inclusive process involving the Board of Directors, guests served, volunteers, community partners and staff. The goals and strategies reflect an integrated approach to fulfilling our mission as Blanchet House moves forward and continues to meet the needs of many. 10 years after opening, Blanchet House increased the number of meals it could serve and the breadth of services it could provide. Thanks impart to the addition of full-time Executive Director, Al Riley, who served for 38 years without pay.

It didn’t feel like any other place that I’ve eaten to get food. It wasn’t like a sack lunch out of a window or a brown paper bag out of the back of somebody’s car. It was a service where I felt like I could come in and eat at a restaurant.

So yeah, this is my first indoor [service], it’s so exciting. Shahrazi, who attended Wilson High School in Southwest Portland, used to be homeless. He was sleeping on the streets, using drugs and, he said, suffering from schizophrenia. We recognize that this injustice can lead to housing and food insecurity, creating the need for our programs.
We just stopped getting really heavy donations lately of tomatoes and cabbage, and sometimes it’s like a whole truckload of broccoli. Another thing that we often have to put into the equation is the preppers and the servers and everybody that makes this happen can fluctuate almost as much as the ingredients can. It’s all on having the residents available, having volunteers who are interested in spending time here. That’s a challenge that can happen every day — whether you’ve got those hands — but then not skipping a beat, we still open at the same time every day three meals a day, six days a week. So, it’s just a blessing when it all works out like this, and it does most all the time.

These BHH services, then, must exemplify our commitment to equity, ensuring that those most affected by an injustice have the necessary resources to live freely and fairly. BHH’s founding ideals prioritize each individual’s needs in order to meet all people we serve where they are. We have served over 16 million meals to those in need and transitioned 10,000 men back into society.
Your financial support makes a powerful difference in the lives of the people in need of Blanchet’s life-sustaining services. The Founders Café is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday-Saturday. We serve freshly prepared, well-balanced meals to anyone who comes to our doors during meal hours. To the extent any donations are processed through a third-party service provider, our donors’ information will only be used for purposes necessary to process the donation.
Since then, Blanchet has grown to provide clothing, hygiene items, community, and transitional recovery programs to thousands of people every year downtown and at a farm. A way you can help people experiencing homelessness is by volunteering with an aid group. At Blanchet House, compassionate people aged 14 and older are needed to serve meals and drinks, organize clothing, and more. COVID vaccinations are required to serve on-site at Blanchet House.
I started on St. Patrick’s Day, everything was shut down, [and I was] all dressed up, nowhere to go. I came out here from Vancouver, and they were the only place open to do things. I actually came out for six days a week when everything was shut down, but I’ve been doing lunches on Mondays ever since, now for a couple of years.
We receive no government or archdiocese funding for programs. A small contribution goes a long way at Blanchet House of Hospitality. After nearly 10 years of planning and fundraising, all the while serving those in need, the Blanchet House board was able to build and open a new building. LEED platinum certified, the new and improved Blanchet House increased our capacity to feed and house those in need.
